Recognizing the trend in rattan and bamboo furniture made in Indonesia and exported all over the world, we attempted this prototype - our take on the peacock chair typology - made in Jalisco using our own local materials hand picked from a nearby forest. The use of local materials and craft techniques infuses this 100+ year old chair style with the regional vernacular of the west Mexico heartland. A step towards a more sustainable way of furniture production that supports indigenous artisans while also eliminating the carbon footprint associated with imported products. The peacock chair is a class of folk designs that belongs to the public domain, so we took this opportunity to explore local production in the twig materiality.
